BookTomato: Bye, Xena..
BookTomato: great fun!
Marlene T: Note On = Keith Snyder, author of Show Control.
BookpgRama: Hi, everyone!
Vicnbeck: bye bye Xena
Stella O 2: bye xena
Note On: Overhyped and underpaid, Jesse. I'll switch if you can think of how. :)
BookpgXena: Thanks for the good chat everyone. See you at Koontz:) Bye Keith:)
BookpgRama: Bye Xena.
HWhited: Note On when was Show Control on shelfs
Note On: HWhited, it shipped to stores in June. Actually, that's when it BEGAN shipping. Small presses take a while to saturate.
HWhited: will you give us preview---mystery or what
Jessekay: Keith (NOTE ON) is the author of a way cool novel called Show Control and we are turning this hour over to him.....
L4EVRYNG: Note on .....tell us bout your book
HWhited: note on preview please mystery or what
BookpgRama: Yeah, Note. I got blind-sided here! We're glad you're here. Do tell about your book!
Note On: My first novel, Show Control, is a mystery/suspense novel (with funny parts) about a musician who looks into the onstage death of a performance artist.
Note On: It's been out for a few months and gotten great reviews (including today's new TBR review!), about which I am thrilled...
EdoRuan: That sounds like one of my plots, Note!!!
Jabar3101: Super - glad for your success
LuBe36: Wonderful!
BookTomato: Do you go on signing tours now, Note?
Note On: Thanks, Jabar!
HWhited: Note on but not in bookstores yet, right?
Vicnbeck: Who's the publisher note?
KateWinds: Note, did you write anything before the book, such as short stories, etc?
Note On: It is in bookstores, HWhited. In fact, this room, Bookaccino, is responsible for amazon.com having to reorder Show Control last week.
PATSCHADO: YAY!!!
Jessekay: Three cheers for Bookacinno
Note On: Six or seven cheers, Jesse. This room is wonderful.
Note On: Tomato, yes, I do go on signing tours. Most recently, in Northern California.
Note On: Vic, the publisher is Write Way.
EdoRuan: You play what, Note?
KTNAN: Note....the review was great
HWhited: Note On any signing tours in Philly area?
BookTomato: Hip Hip Hooray!
V DUB: show control how big of a book
Note On: Edo, I play keyboards.
EdoRuan: Oh oh
Note On: Yes, wasn't the review great, KT? I think I owe Cubs a latte. :)
Wcpainter: with cookies, Note
Marlene T: Cubs thoroughly enjoyed the book, Note.
Note On: Nothing planned near Philly yet, HWhited, but you never know...
Jessekay: payola, Note?
Note On: Would it work, Jesse. :)
Jessekay: I fear not
V DUB: i love a good book one of my fav.mary higgins clark
BookpgRama: Note, can you tell us a bit more about the plot?
Marlene T: LOL!
EdoRuan: Hope it's a huge best seller, Note.
Note On: Rama, sure. The main character is a keyboardist (as am I) who finds himself...
ROJOHN: WHERE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA WILL YOU BE SIGNING?
Vicnbeck: ::::::::water on Tomato's face:::::::::::::
Note On: investigating the onstage death of a performance artist who was killed by her own...
GSulli9444: Tomato::::::fanning:::::::::::::
Note On: stage lasers. With the help of his two friends -- an actor and an artist --
Note On: and a mysterious online stranger, he neglects his day job and sets out to find the killer.
BookTomato: How did this idea come to you, Note?
BookpgRama: Welcome readers! We have Keith Snyder with us as a guest. He wrote Show Control
EdoRuan: first person, Note?
Note On: Edo, no, it's third person.
Note On: ROHJOHN, I have already done No. Cal. Try the SF Mystery Bookshop or M is for Mystery in San Mateo.
ROJOHN: thanks i will
LuBe36: Does Amazon have a new supply now?
Note On: LuBe, yes, amazon has stock again.
Note On: BT: it came to me a few years ago during my day job. :)
Note On: Which is where I also started writing it. :)
LuBe36: I will have to get it right away. Sounds like my kind of book!
BookTomato: How long did it take you to write it?
Note On: BT: It took about three years. Could have been shorter, but I had to eat and pay rent. :)
BookTomato: yes, I understand.
Note On: Have I missed anyone's question? This is a little overwhelming at this end.
Wcpainter: Do you have another in the works, Note?
Note On: Wc, yes, I'm about 3/4 of the way through another mystery/suspense novel.
Wcpainter: Title yet?
Note On: Wc: the second book is called "Coffin's got the dead guy on the inside," which is an old...
Note On: musicians' joke: "What's the difference between a cello and a coffin?"
Wcpainter: LOL....cute!
GSulli9444: LOL, Note
GSulli9444: NOTE..Keith..I just ordered your book from Amazon. Can hardly wait--unique concept
Note On: Thanks, GSulli! I hope you enjoy it!
GSulli9444: Note...I'm sure I will!
BookTomato: Note.. when the idea began to come to you.. did it come as an idea for a book? or was it just a thought... at first?
Note On: BT: At first, I just wanted to write about these characters. The plot came next.
BookTomato: The characters came first.. that is interesting!
Note On: Tomato: Yes, the characters came first.
KateWinds: Note, I asked if you wrote anything before your book, such as short stories?
Note On: Kate, yes, a few, but not all that many.
Pbgerson: Does your new book have the same characters, Note?
Note On: Pb, some of the same characters, yes.
BookpgRama: Note, did you have a "fire in your belly" to write first or did the plot idea come first?
Note On: Rama: I wanted to write a mystery. The plot idea came later.
Stella O 2: There is no vcandrews vdub doesn't that bother you ?
HWhited: vdub try Susan issacs if you haven't very good
V DUB: her books were always a little strange didn;t you think
LuBe36: Note can you retire from your day job now and write more?
Note On: LuBe, no, can't retire from the day job yet! I'm still working on that! Luckily, I like my day job.
BookpgRama: Note, sounds like you have the best of two worlds!
Note On: Sometimes it seems that way, Rama. I'm a composer, so sometimes writing seems...
Note On: like the distraction part of my life!
KateWinds: Note, how did you find your publisher?
Note On: Kate: I got published in an unusual way...
LuBe36: Tell us please.
Note On: I had this completed manuscript...
Note On: and didn't know what to do with it...
Note On: I found out that the American Booksellers ASsociation show was in L.A. that year...
Note On: so I asked all the writers I could find whether it was a good place to try to sell a book...
Note On: without exception, they all told me "No, that's not for writers. You'll just be in the way..
Note On: So, I went. :) ...
Wcpainter: a rebel Note!
Mommybx2: good job note!
Note On: I found all the publishers there who had the word "mystery" in their program blurbs....
Note On: and pitched the book directly to editors of major and smaller houses...
Note On: I ended up with 12 requests for manuscripts...
Note On: ...got 11 rejections...
Note On: ...and one contract offer.
BookTomato: So, Note.. you don't have an "agent?"
Note On: BT, no, I don't have an agent. But I am looking for one now.
LuBe36: What a great idea Note.
ArborC: cool!
KateWinds: Note, goes to prove that everyone needs to march to their own drummer
Wcpainter: Will that make life easier ...or harder Note?
Note On: Wc, an agent should make life easier.
Mommybx2: Note when your rich and famous we will enjoy sharing that story with our friends!:)
Note On: I hope you're able to share it soon, then, Mommybx!
Wcpainter: LOL, Note
Mommybx2: Me too!
Jabar3101: ABA usually has a place where agents will interview prospective authors
Note On: Jabar, you still have to have an appointment for those interviews, I found out.
Note On: Now that I'm 3/4 through the second book, I'm getting serious about finding an agent.
SEANC39701: Note .... Just be careful your agent isn't a road agent
KateWinds: Note, why do write?
Note On: Kate... I'm not sure I can answer that question...
KateWinds: Note, because you have to , for fame, for money , for...?
Note On: I suppose I write because I think I can do it well, and people should do things well.
BookTomato: You evidentally do, Note On! People are loving the book!
Note On: The response has been very encouraging, BT. :)
KTNAN: so you enjoy it.Right?
Note On: KT, I do enjoy it.
Note On: ...and because it gives me great satisfaction to complete a book.
Jabar3101: Suggest you contact authors you like - ask about getting in touch w/ their agents
Note On: Jabar, yes, that's part of what I'm doing. I do have some agent interest now.
Mommybx2: could someone explain how to order the book on line?
Note On: Mommybx2, go to amazon.com on the web. They have it in stock.
Mommybx2: wil do, thanks!
Note On: Thank you!
PATSCHADO: Note On.. are you acquainted with "real" people who are like the characters in your book.. especially Robert.. who was wonderfully portrayed.
Note On: In fact, PAT, Robert is somewhat based on an actor friend of mine who performs with me...
Note On: in the spoken word and music group I'm in... one very fun development has been...
Note On: that we've turned some of my book reading appearances into full-fledged ...
Note On: dramatizations, with acting and music, and this guy has ended up portraying Robert,...
Note On: the character that was based on him!
LuBe36: 'll bet that is fun. Are you doing this for the public?
Note On: LuBe, yes, we've done it at bookstores.
KTNAN: do you plan on traveling with this book or wait till you finished the 2nd one?
Note On: Traveling?
KTNAN: yes going to other state for book signings or whatever
Note On: KT, I do that, yes. My schedule is on the web if you're interested:...
Note On: http://www.woollymammoth.com/showcontrol
SEANC39701: Note ....... Canada looks forward to you coming here for a signing
Note On: Sean, Canada will be a while, I think!
Stella O 2: so how do I find the review you were talking about Note On?
Note On: Stella, to to keyword: TBR and do a search on Show Control.
LuBe36: Well I'm glad I havenŐt read it yeat. What fun to imagine people acting it out in bookstores
Note On: LuBe, it was a lot of fun.
GSulli9444: Note, is this your official appearance tonight? Or will you be back at 12:AM PT?
Note On: GSulli -- this is the official appearance. :)
Note On: That's why I'm talking about myself even more than usual.
SEANC39701: LOL Note
Shodan8089: Note On - the precis of the book you gave the other night sounded really interesting - am ordering it from local Barnes & Noble
Note On: Shodan, thank you! I hope you enjoy it!
Note On: My fingers are smokin' here....
PATSCHADO: Note On.. were there any particular circumstances that gave you inspiration for the great car chase scenes?
Note On: PAT, actually, I'm having even more fun with a car chase in book 2 (which isn't sold yet, BT, so I don't know when it will be out). If you recall Jason's car, it's not in the best shape. I've put the old Plymouth in a chase with a new Taurus on the freeway. The old car doesn't do too well, I'm afraid...
PATSCHADO: Note On: Super..it was wonderfully done.. I could feel the motion! Well written!!
Note On: Thanks, PAT! I have an approach to action sequences that comes from how I think people perceive them...
Note On: (Thanks, Zoikes!) ...
RSaltzian: hi everybody
BookpgRama: I will be interested to read that car scene!
Note On: In the car chase, for instance, you'll find a lot of detail...
PATSCHADO: Zoikes.. I predict you will love it!
Note On: this is because I've noticed that when I'm in scary, physical situations...
Note On: things seem to go into slow-motion.
Zoikes319: I read the review Pat and I've heard Note on talk about it a couple of times. I have no
BookpgRama: Hi, readers! We have an author guest tonight. His name is Keith Snyder (Note On)
Note On: I use the detail to emulate that slow-motion feeling.
BookTomato: Do you find yourself more comfortable with #2 book, then?
Note On: BT, no, not more comfortable with book 2. They're different from each other, though.
BookpgRama: Note, are you writing with Hollywood in mind?
Note On: Rama, no, I don't write with Hollywood in mind. I write with writing in mind, and that's all
GSulli9444: Good, Note. Hollywood not best, your own is best.
Note On: Not that I'd mind making it into a movie, GSulli. :) Got a million dollars?
Wcpainter: Break open those piggy banks!
GSulli9444: :) I wish....Sounds like you'll get sponsered...Chris Carter did it.
KateWinds: Note, I just went to your web site. I like that you included family and friends .... how is your film going?
Note On: Kate, the film(s) are going great! "Lady's Man" premiered this month in Las Vegas to about 250 people, and "1 is for Gun" is now in post-production.
Note On: If anyone's interested in the web site, the URL is in my profile.
Wcpainter: Screenplays too, Note?
Note On: Wc, my wife and I are writing a romantic musical comedy, and I co-wrote the screenplay to "1 is for Gun," which is one of the short films I'm doing now. It's about a guy who....fantasizes about being a 1940s film noir black and white detective.
RSaltzian: sometimes people tell me that i should write a story but i am not very confident.
Note On: RS, the worst that happens is that it's not very good and you write another one. :)
Zoikes319: I just looked up the address on your profile Note on. BTW happy belated birthday!
Note On: I got a new modem for my birthday. I'm using it now.
BookTomato: a new toy for the author!
Zoikes319: A new modem? Wish I got neat stuff like that! :)
Booksie2: I love the book, Note :)
Note On: Booksie, thank you.
GSulli9444: Note, you are so creative, and your wife
GSulli9444: Note, we love you too:)
Note On: Aw, shucks, GSulli. :)
Booksie2: Is your wife in the music business too, Note?
Note On: Booksie, my wife is an opera singer.
Booksie2: Impressive!!!!!
Rockick 10: We mustfigure a way to have Note On as a regular in here
Note On: She just did a concert in San Francisco, and she'll be doing one in L.A. in April.
BookpgRama: Rock, Note is a regular here in Bookaccino!
Wcpainter: he is regular...in the mornings, he shows up often
Note On: She performed one of the pieces I wrote for her!
Note On: Hey, leave my regularity out of this!
GSulli9444: You do, Note, in mornings?
Booksie2: Do you have kids , Note?
Note On: No kids, Booksie. A conscious choice.
Booksie2: Pity, they would've been born singing :)
Wcpainter: LOL
Rockick 10: LOL Wc
LuBe36: LOL
Note On: It's unpredictable, GSulli. I show up in Bookaccino when I have other things I'm supposed to be doing.
LuBe36: Note you sound like me.
KateWinds: Note, I like that about your wide performing your music.
Note On: Me too, Kate.
RSaltzian: please can someone tell me how i get to the Koontz interview
Note On: RS, go to keyword: NOT KEITH
Pbgerson: LOL
Wcpainter: LOL
Booksie2: LOL Note!!!!!!
PATSCHADO: LOL< NOTE!!!
Note On: Not that I'm upset or anything.
Note On: :P
LuBe36: Was it the first time it was performed in Public and how was ir received?
Note On: LuBe, yes, it was the debut, and it was received very well! Very nice evening.
LuBe36: That is really romantic! Lucky wife.
Ditten604: what is the theme of his novel....scary or true mystery?
Note On: Ditten, it's a mystery/suspense novel with funny parts.
PATSCHADO: Ditten.. very, very funny parts! :)
Booksie2: Ditten, it is both scarey and very funny.....I am in love with the protagonists, all 3 of them
Stella O 2: Note how soon before the paperback come out?
Note On: Stella, there is no paperback deal yet. Since it's a small press hardcover, it doesn't get the same attention as a major publisher's books do. But it could still happen any time.
Stella O 2: Note then I'll have to order the hardcover then:)
Zoikes319: Note on do you have plans to write another book?
Note On: Zoikes, yes, I'm 3/4 through the new one. :)
Ditten604: Good..is to be a series like so many out now..3 ????????
Note On: Ditten, I intend for it to be a series, but we'll see if publishers concur. :)
JoanMartha: Hey Note hows your book selling
Note On: Joan, it's selling well enough that I have hopes that the first printing will sell out.
GSulli9444: Note, I do the same...unpredictable...Would it be appropriate to state you wife's Opera name
Note On: GSulli, my wife is Kathleen Haaversen. But I just call her "La Diva." :)
JoanMartha: was here one other day when you were here note
GSulli9444: Thank you, I know the name...thinking...
Zoikes319: Note on is your new book a sequel or with completely new characters?
Note On: Zoikes, the new book has some of the same characters.
Ditten604: will add it to my list of new reading material....the list is long since I've found this room
Zoikes319: I have the same problem Ditten
LuBe36: Ditten I would need two lifetimes to read all on my list. But Show Control has moved up to first place.
Note On: Yes, Ditten, this room is great. It's because of Bookaccino that amazon.com had to reorder Show ControlBookpgRama: Note, that's great! We're glad we're so influential! :)
Pbgerson: So all the books are 1st ed., there's not a 2nd printing yet?
Note On: Pb, all the books that are out there now are 1st edition hardcover. If any of you are collectors: Show Control is a 1st edition, 1st novel, hardcover. Good investment.
Luck87: Just curious---where are you talking/typing from, Note?
Note On: Luck: I'm in my studio.
Luck87: Which is where?
Note On: Venice Beach, CA, Luck.
Ditten604: Amazon .com has been a real find even for professional materials I needed
LuBe36: Note, have you seen the Circque du Soliel?
Note On: Yes, LuBe. Great show!
LuBe36: One of the object manipulators is my son-in law.
Note On: Juggler?
LuBe36: Yes That is unfancy name.
Note On: Object manipulator. :)
BookpgRama: Note, do you know Carol Doumani?
Note On: Rama, no I don't. ???
BookpgRama: Note, she's a mystery writer from the same neck of the woods.
Note On: Really, Rama? No, I don't know her.
Pbgerson: So, how can we get you to sign our copies of your book? :)
Note On: Pb, you can either order them that way from the publisher, come to a signing, or send it to me with return envelope/postage.
Pbgerson: The one I ordered had a sprung cover, Note. Had to order another. Oh, will order signed!
Note On: Pb, I don't know if the bookstore will get you signed ones, but the publisher can.
BookTomato: I'm going now.. Note On.. Congratulations! And I will get it this week!
Note On: Hope you like it, BT!
BookpgRama: Note, did you always want to be a writer?
Note On: Rama, since I was a little kid, whenever I went into a bookstore I would find the place where my books would be some day. When I was a kid, I found the place in the science fiction section, but I published a mystery. :)
Pbgerson: Glad you wrote mystery and not sci fi, Note :)
PATSCHADO: Pbgerson.. so am I!!
Wcpainter: Crystal ball must have had a little crack
BookpgRama: You are so lucky that you were able to fulfill that dream!
Stella O 2: Note I've always wanted to write too and am interested in the age an author first publishes. Stella O 2: so if you don't mind...?
Note On: Stella, I sold Show ControlKateWinds: Note, did your parents encourage al of your creativity?
Note On: Kate, my mother told me I could be anything I wanted, and encouraged me. She's why I do creative work.
GSulli9444: {{{{{Note's Mom}}}
Wcpainter: Do you paint too....since you cover the other arts?
Note On: Wc, I do graphic design to pay for music and writing. :)
BookpgRama: Note, you ARE a creative person! That's a surfeit of talents!
Wcpainter: when do you have time for all this?
Note On: Got me, Wc. I have no idea where I find the time.
Zoikes319: So are you still interested in writing sci-fi Note?
Note On: Zoikes, yes, I have some science fiction ideas, but I'm not writing them yet.
SGRIBELL: Note: I feel you're in a very difficult field. There is no question of the creativity demanded of this genre.
Note On: SGRIBELL: What's the point if there's no challenge? :)
Stella O 2: Note will you focus mainly on music as a background for your stories?
Note On: Stella, that's how it's been happening so far, but it wasn't really a conscious choice.
Stella O 2: but its true to write what you know about then?
BookpgRama: Note, doesn't it turn out that you write what you know?
Note On: Yes, but that doesn't necessarily mean what people think it means. For instance, I've never lived in a spaceship, but I could write it, because I've lived in cramped quarters, been far from home, etc.
Note On: (That's not my own example, by the way, but it's a good one.)
Note On: I have an idea for another character who won't be a musician, but I'm still feeling my way with it. I haven't begun to write it yet.
SEANC39701: I think there is a little mystery in all books
SGRIBELL: I would like to see someone break through the image of the alien into something none of us have ever imagined. Not possible, of course, since we cannot write what we have not imagined. But think on it.
Zoikes319: Sgribell sounds like you should write that book :)
SGRIBELL: Ah, that imaginative and creative I am not.
Note On: Everyone is imaginative and creative.
SGRIBELL: To a more or lesser degree, Note.
Note On: No, SGR, I believe that children start out artists, and too many have it beaten out of them.
GSulli9444: Yes, Note!
KateWinds: Note, I am leaving for now ... will keep in touch .. am tired ... do not like Koontz ... not going there.
Note On: Thanks for coming, Kate! thanks for making the disinction. :)
Wcpainter: LOL, Note....we mystery lovers are sticking here
Note On: I'll stay too, then, Wc. :)
SGRIBELL: Well, Note, I agree somewhat. As I get older, my friends are often surprised at the various thing I can do, and want to do, all of which I no doubt had the ability to do, but not the belief that I could do them. Only when I didn't care about other people did I discover that I had capabilities and possibilities beyond my imagination.
Note On: All children are artists. That includes the children we used to be. At the risk of sounding new agey.
Zoikes319: very new agey Note but I like the idea anyway :)
JaJaArt: Are you talking painting artists or just artists in general.
Note On: Artists in general.
SGRIBELL: The children we used to be are all within us yet.
JaJaArt: Because I'm an artist artist.
PATSCHADO: Note On: your hero, Jason, certainly uses his imagination and creativity to create some of the weapons he uses to fight his "war."
Note On: PAT, that was part of the fun for me. :)
SEANC39701: I will be going to Koontz soon .... afterall it isn't every night you get to talk to 2 great writers
Note On: Have fun, Sean! Thanks for coming!
GSulli9444: Note, You are exactly right about children, plus we are still them, & that's not "new".
Note On: I know so many people who are into this "Artist's Way" thing, which strikes me as an attempt to undo the damage done in childhood.
GSulli9444: Agree, again, Note.
Zoikes319: Note how long did it take you to write Show Control?
Note On: Zoikes, three years. Could have done it faster if I'd known it was going to sell!
Zoikes319: LOL Note.
SGRIBELL: Note, that should be the motto of writers!
Note On: It probably should be, SGr.
GSulli9444: Note, didn't you say Show Control is in the making of movie stage...
Note On: GSulli, no, there's no movie planned. I'd like to make one, though.
Wcpainter: Note...would you do the screenplay, or let someone else?
Note On: Wc, I'd rather do the screenplay myself, but I'd consider option offers.
Note On: My wife just signed on and she's trying to get here to watch me chat. So I have to be brilliant now. :)
Wcpainter: LOL....
Zoikes319: LOL
Pbgerson: Pressure's on.
BookpgRama: What is her screen name, Note?
BookpgRama: Note, she should have come sooner. You were absolutely brilliant.
Djrfubar: Note is always brilliant
Note On: I don't think she wants to be pointed out, but we'll see...
SGRIBELL: GS, am I being rambuntious?
Wcpainter: Most writers seem frustrated by what others turn out for them
Note On: Wc, yes, but sometimes there are compensations....
Wcpainter: like a little free time?
Note On: Or a little money, yes.
Mommybx2: Just ordered the book Note! Thank you!
Zoikes319: Rama is this the official countdown? :)
Wcpainter: Note....who do you like to read...assuming you hve time
Note On: Wc, I don't have a small list of favorites, but recently...
Note On: PG Wodehouse, Russ MacDonald, James Lee Burke, George Dawes Greene...
PATSCHADO: Note On... I was interested to see how Jason and Paul ended up.
Pbgerson: Careful, Pat, I'm only on page 45 :)
Wcpainter: no endings!
Note On: Yes, it's probably best not to discuss the ending.
Pbgerson: And loving every page, by the way :)
PATSCHADO: Ok.. forgive me...
GSulli9444: Yikes, Note, don't tell ending:-)
Wcpainter: ------thapping Pat
Pbgerson: Perhaps there'll be more on that in book 2?
Note On: MMmmmmmmmmmmmmaybe, Pb. :)
PATSCHADO: Wc.. ::Pat accepting thap::: :::ouch:: deserved it!
FISCHYD: What's Show Control about, Note? I confess, I didn't read it!!
Note On: FISCHYD, it's a mystery/suspense novel about a musician who looks into the onstage death of a performance artist.
FISCHYD: Sounds interesting Note, what gave you the idea?
Note On: FISCHY, I had the characters kind of kicking around in my imagination, so I wrote the plot to suit them.
Zoikes319: Note is your second book a murder mystery too?
Note On: Yes, Zoikes.
Pbgerson: Funny how murder just follows some people around, eh?
Note On: Pb, that's a hard thing to deal with as a writer. How many murders can one person solve?
Wcpainter: Note...Jessica did it every week!
Note On: Wc, my point exactly.
Wcpainter: LOL
Gailsybaby: Hi. I dont know if anyone cares but dean knoonz is in the coliceum anwering question and hardly anyone is there
BookpgRama: Gails, you're kidding! Hardly anyone is in the Coliseum?
Jabar3101: Dropped into Koontz interview - too structured - better here
Gailsybaby: you cant let the poor guy bomb
Note On: Gails, we have an author in here, too!
Wcpainter: you tell em Note
Gailsybaby: who?
Wcpainter: LOL
Note On: Me. :)
ICTURNER: lol
Wcpainter: Note On.....great new author
BookpgRama: Let me introduce Note On, who is really Keith Snyder, who just published Show Control, a mystery
Djrfubar: Note, we have THE author in here
Gailsybaby: has anyone read "death of friends" by michael nava? it was the best i read in a long time
Note On: I've heard good things about Nava from Dale Furutani, author of Death in Little Tokyo.
Gailsybaby: i had never heard of him
Wcpainter: Note, I hate to say it...but have to turn in....two early mornings in a row got me!
Note On: Thanks for coming, Wc! It was a pleasure chatting.
SGRIBELL: Note, will you be joing the ranks of esteemed mystery writers now?
Note On: Steamed mystery writers, SGRI? Sure, if my royalty checks don't come.
HOFANATIC: Note, who published your book?
Note On: HOF: Write Way.
SGRIBELL: Note, who is your favorite mystery writer?
Note On: SGRI, I don't have one favorite. I wouldn't have written Show ControlSGRIBELL: One of my favorites, he is.
Note On: I like James Lee Burke, Chandler, Hammett, PG Wodehouse, though he's not mystery...
SGRIBELL: I'll get Wodehouse out and re-read him on your recommendation.
Lrdrama: Oh, I love James Lee Burke, too
Lrdrama: and Wodehouse
Note On: George Dawes Greene... Ross MacDonald. Lots of people.
Josh SS1: Greene wrote The Juror, no?
Note On: Yes, and The Caveman's Valentine
SGRIBELL: Do you see a distinction between mystery and mystery/suspense?
Note On: SGRI, yes. I call Show ControlUchusen: Note, did you have trouble selling this book due to crossing genres?
Note On: Uchusen, I don't know if it helped or hindered, but in the end, it sold.
Uchusen: Thank you, Note.
Note On: Sorry I couldn't give you a useful answer, Uchusen.
Uchusen: Note, you did give me a useful answer. If a book is good it doesn't matter. ; )
Note On: That's what I believe, Uchusen. But I could just be naive and lucky.
SGRIBELL: What did you think of the Spenser television series?
Note On: I thought Hawk was magnificient and Urich wasn't Spenser.
SGRIBELL: A popular opinion. But I wasn't nearly as crazy about Hawk flying a spaceship.
Pbgerson: Oh, I like Urich as Spenser. He had the dimples :)
Uchusen: Note, did it take you long to sell your manuscript and did you use an agent?
Note On: Uchusen, it didn't take long to sell, and no, I didn't use an agent. However, I am now looking for an agent for book 2, and I probably would have gotten a better deal if I'd had one for book 1. But I don't regret the course -- Show ControlJjharshaw: note when developing characters did you think what would i do or what would he/she do?
Note On: Jj, both.
ElinorMc: I suppose I'm supposed to know this, but what kind of book is this?
Note On: Elinor, it's a mystery/suspense novel with funny parts. :)
Uchusen: Have any woman mystery writers inspired you, such as Marcia Muller?
Note On: Uchusen, I wish I could say yes, since I think more women should be published, but the writers who really inspired me have mostly been men.
Uchusen: Note, I understand. That seems natural enough.
ElinorMc: You definitely have to get an agent. Right away.
Note On: Elinor, if you know a good one, I'm taking applications. :)
ElinorMc: Who have you tried?
Note On: I'd rather not list people in chat, Elinor, but I've got some interest from a couple.
ElinorMc: Maybe try Dominick Abel.
Note On: Yes, Elinor, I've had Dominic recommended by one of his authors.
ElinorMc: I like him. He's good. ElinorMc: But he might not take someone new.
Note On: I don't know, Elinor. I'm in no hurry, and as I said, a couple of agents are interested.
ElinorMc: Make sure it's the right one.
Note On: Right, Elinor.
SGRIBELL: Note, you deserve a great deal of congratulations and best wishes. You have done a wonderful job, and some of us are very envious, at the same time that you give us all hope that we, too can achieve what you have done.
Lrdrama: Note, I can't wait to read it...love mysteries
Uchusen: Note, from where do you draw your characters?
Note On: Uchusen, some I base on people I know or have met, others I imagine whole. And..some are combinations of those things.
Uchusen: Note, what advice would you give to a new author?
Note On: Uchusen: The only advice I think is valid is this: Keep going.
SGRIBELL: Note, did you suffer the same pangs of unrequited confidence that Anne Lamott did, which
SGRIBELL: she detailed in her book, "Bird by Bird," that she was terrible, would never write another good book, would never be published again, would never be able to survive, etc.?
Note On: I haven't read "Bird by Bird," SGRI, sorry!
BookpgRama: Folks, Note On has been with us for about an hour and a half and he needs to go. Note On, I want to thank you very much for coming to Bookaccino! This has been really great!
Note On: Thank you, too, for having me!
Pbgerson: Thanks, Note. Great chat!
SGRIBELL: Hope to see you around.
Zoikes319: night Note I can't wait to get your book!
BookpgRama: It is so interesting to talk to people who are involved in the creative process.
Lrdrama: bye Note! enjoyed it!
Note On: Thank you all for having me! And those who plan to read "Show Control," I sincerely hope you enjoy it.
GSulli9444: Godd everything, Note, and Thank YOU!!!!!
Djrfubar: Note, one question before you go?
Note On: Yes, Djr?
Djrfubar: You said we could send our copy to be signed....where would we send?
Note On: When you've got the copy, Djr, email me and I'll let you know where to mail it.
Note On: Thanks again, all! It's been a treat.
GSulli9444: :), Note
Zoikes319: Night Note :)
BookpgRama: Nite, Note On. Hope you'll come back soon, as just folks! Okay?
