THE NIGHT MEN

It's out!

As of today, it probably hasn't made it to your local bookstore, but it was on the dealer tables at Bouchercon, and it's started shipping from the warehouse. It's an unusual book, but early reviews have been better than I'd hoped for:

Highly original... might win cult status —Publishers Weekly

Frequently funny and at times surprisingly moving —Kirkus

There's more about it at my website:

WHAT DO WE WRITE NOW?

This unsanctioned—indeed, insurgent—gathering of writers and readers at Bouchercon (the "World Mystery Convention") was organized so that there'd be some sort of forum for the one issue everyone was talking about: What the hell can mystery writers possibly write after Sept. 11? The first four speakers were Jonathan Harrington, Sinclair Browning, me, and SJ Rozan; the floor was then opened for general discussion. Mark Alan Miller had a camcorder out in the audience, and he was kind enough to allow me to have the tape. Audio recordings of the four initial speakers can be heard at:

SIGNINGS

I won't be doing a lot of appearances for THE NIGHT MEN, but I will be at The Black Orchid in NYC on November 28, 7-8 PM. I may do one or two other NY-area signings; the particulars will appear on the "author appearances" page at my website.

BOOKSENSE

Booksense.com asked me to be one of their "Very Interesting People." I wrote a piece about where stories come from:

For those who aren't familiar with it, Booksense is interesting in its own right; not only does it have interviews and book stuff, but it offers a viable alternative to Amazon. Online orders are taken almost exactly as Amazon takes them, but you're actually buying from an independent bookstore in your area. Next time I do a major upgrade to my website, I'll be replacing all the Amazon links with Booksense links.

MAINE TIMES

I'm embroiled in an imbroglio at the Maine Times over a review they ran of Tess Gerritsen's book "The Surgeon." Here's an article by Brendan Wolfe:

GROVER SPEAKS

Cat pictures are so 1997.

I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE GINGER

One of the big events for me at this year's Bouchercon was finally getting to tell Gary Warren Niebuhr how I'd Tuckerized him (used his name for a character) in the new book. Gary's been Tuckerized before, and one of his favorites is as a spitting cop—the character gets out of a patrol car and spits.

"Spitting cop," I thought. "I can top that." So it was a pleasure to finally tell him that in THE NIGHT MEN, he's the homosexual lover of a banjo player. I was afraid he'd be offended, but it turns out he actually used to play the banjo.
